Bond Repair: Marketing claims or scientific reality?

Bond Repair has emerged over the past few years as a new category of hair care products designed for damaged hair. Found in many shampoos, masks, conditioners and serums, these technologies claim to strengthen the hair fibre, reduce breakage and improve the condition of the hair following colouring, bleaching or other chemical treatments.

Are Bond Repair treatments genuinely capable of rebuilding the bonds within the hair fibre, or do some marketing claims oversimplify far more complex biological mechanisms?

To answer these questions, it is necessary to distinguish between current scientific knowledge and marketing claims. We will examine what Bond Repair actually means, the extent to which these technologies can improve the properties of the hair fibre, and why two products claiming the same benefits may deliver very different levels of performance. How does hair become more fragile?

To understand the value of Bond Repair treatments, it is first necessary to look at the mechanisms that weaken the hair fibre.

At the core of the hair lies the cortex, which provides most of its mechanical strength. The question remains how they actually work and to what extent their effects are supported by scientific evidence.

Can Bond Repair actually repair hair?

This is probably the most important question.

From a scientific perspective, hair is a non-living biological fibre. Unlike the skin, it has no regenerative capacity. Consequently, damaged hair fibres cannot be repaired in the biological sense of the term.

Bond Repair technologies do not restore the hair fibre to its original state. Depending on their composition, they may improve the mechanical properties of the hair fibre, increase its resistance to breakage, and reduce the effects of damage caused by chemical or heat treatments. The observed benefits result from interactions between the formulation ingredients and the hair fibre rather than from any process of biological regeneration.

This distinction is essential. In cosmetics, the term “repair” refers to improving the properties and appearance of the hair without permanently restoring its original structure.

Why don’t all Bond Repair treatments deliver the same results?

Today, the term Bond Repair encompasses various formulation approaches designed for damaged hair. Depending on the manufacturer, products may combine biomimetic peptides, hydrolysed proteins, amino acids, ceramides, biomimetic lipids, or other ingredients developed to enhance the performance of hair care products.

These technologies are not all based on the same mechanisms of action. Depending on their composition, they may improve certain mechanical properties of the hair fibre, reduce breakage, or enhance the cosmetic properties of damaged hair. The benefits obtained vary according to the ingredients used, their concentrations, and the overall formulation of the product.

As a result, two products claiming a Bond Repair effect may deliver very different results. The presence of a particular active ingredient alone does not guarantee product performance. Ingredient concentration, ingredient compatibility, pH, raw material quality, and the manufacturing process all directly influence the performance of the finished product.

There is therefore no universal active ingredient capable of repairing every type of hair damage. The performance of a Bond Repair treatment depends primarily on the quality of its formulation. Any claimed benefits must be supported by instrumental testing, consumer studies, and evidence that complies with cosmetic regulatory requirements.

What marketing claims say… and what scientific studies show

The terminology used to present Bond Repair products often simplifies complex scientific mechanisms. It is therefore important to distinguish marketing messages from scientifically demonstrated benefits.

When a product claims to “repair hair”, this does not mean that it permanently restores the hair fibre to its original condition. Bond Repair treatments are intended to improve the mechanical properties of damaged hair, increase its resistance to breakage, and enhance its overall appearance.

The expression “bond rebuilding” should also be interpreted with caution. Depending on the technologies employed, ingredients may interact with the hair fibre in different ways and help improve its properties without restoring it to its original state.

Similarly, the concept of “permanent repair” is not scientifically accurate. The benefits observed depend, among other factors, on the initial condition of the hair, the quality of the formulation, and regular product use.

Finally, the effects of a Bond Repair treatment vary according to the ingredients used, their concentrations, and the formulation itself. This is why two products claiming the same benefits may deliver different results.

How can the effectiveness of a Bond Repair treatment be evaluated?

The effectiveness of a Bond Repair treatment cannot be assessed simply by the impression it leaves after application. For a claim to be credible, it must be supported by objective evidence in accordance with cosmetic regulations.

Depending on the claimed benefits, laboratories may measure various parameters, such as breakage resistance, the mechanical strength of the hair fibre, ease of combing, or the condition of the hair surface before and after treatment. These results may be complemented by consumer studies to assess perceived benefits under normal conditions of use.

It is also important to remember that reported performance always depends on the testing protocol used. Two products may claim similar results while having been evaluated using different methods. This is why the quality of the data and the transparency of the testing are just as important as the figures highlighted in marketing communications.
