Cosmetic testing safety and compliance laboratory

In the cosmetics industry, every product must undergo rigorous evaluations and testing before being placed on the market. These analyses help ensure consumer safety, formula stability and compliance with the European Cosmetic Regulation (EC) No. 1223/2009.

Cosmetic laboratories carry out several categories of tests to verify skin compatibility, assess product stability and support cosmetic claims in accordance with regulatory requirements.

Cosmetic safety assessment

Before commercialisation, a cosmetic product must be evaluated by a qualified expert, usually a toxicologist. This safety assessment includes the toxicological review of ingredients, the evaluation of consumer exposure and the overall safety validation of the finished product.

These data are compiled within the Product Information File (PIF), a mandatory regulatory document required for placing a cosmetic product on the European market.

Challenge test and microbiological safety

The Challenge Test evaluates the effectiveness of the preservative system used in a cosmetic formula. During this test, controlled micro organisms are introduced into the product in order to monitor their evolution over time.

This analysis confirms that the formula is adequately protected against microbiological contamination throughout its shelf life and normal use.

Cosmetic stability testing

Stability testing evaluates the behaviour of a cosmetic product under different storage conditions. Accelerated ageing studies are conducted to analyse the evolution of several key parameters within the formula.

Among the main elements monitored:

  • pH
  • viscosity
  • colour
  • odour
  • emulsion stability

These analyses help determine the product shelf life and the Period After Opening (PAO).

Dermatological testing and skin tolerance

Dermatological testing helps evaluate the skin tolerance of cosmetic products.

The Patch Test is one of the most widely used methods. It consists of applying the product to volunteers’ skin for 24 to 48 hours under controlled dermatological supervision in order to observe possible skin reactions.

Additional evaluations may also be conducted depending on the product category, including ocular tolerance testing, HRIPT or RIPT sensitisation tests and phototoxicity testing.

Efficacy testing and cosmetic claim substantiation

Efficacy testing helps document the performance of a cosmetic product and support marketing claims.

Depending on the product and its intended benefits, studies may measure parameters such as

  • skin hydration
  • improvement in skin appearance
  • skin comfort
  • skin softness

These evaluations strengthen the credibility of cosmetic claims while ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements.

Research safety and innovation in cosmetic development

Cosmetic evaluations and safety testing are fundamental steps in the development of modern cosmetic products.

At Laboratoire Orescience, these procedures are integrated into the research and development process to ensure cosmetic formulas that are safe, stable and compliant with European and international regulations.

Safety, quality and innovation guide every stage of our cosmetic product development.
