Does drinking water really hydrate the skin?

Many of us believe that drinking plenty of water is the key to hydrated skin. However, this idea warrants some clarification. While proper hydration is essential for overall bodily functions, it is not sufficient to ensure supple and well-hydrated skin.

Why isn’t drinking water enough to hydrate the skin?

Skin hydration depends on various factors, and the water we drink primarily acts within the body. The skin, however, is protected by the hydrolipidic barrier, a thin layer of sebum and water that prevents excessive water evaporation from the deeper layers of the epidermis.

When this barrier is compromised, the skin becomes dry, tight, and prone to irritation. Unfortunately, the water we use for daily cleansing can further weaken this barrier, particularly if it is hard (rich in calcium) or excessively hot.

Can water harm the skin?

The role of temperature

The hotter the water, the more it disrupts the skin’s protective barrier. Hot water removes not only impurities but also the skin’s natural lipids, which are crucial for maintaining hydration. The result: the skin becomes more vulnerable to external aggressors and may feel dry or rough.

💡 Tip: Use lukewarm water to cleanse your face, especially if your skin is dry or sensitive.

The impact of hard water

In some regions, tap water is rich in calcium, which can exacerbate dryness. This is particularly problematic for dry, atopic, or reactive skin types.

💡 Tip: If you live in an area with hard water, consider rinsing your skin with a dermatological water spray or using a facial mist to counteract the drying effects.

How to effectively hydrate the skin?

To keep your skin hydrated and protected, adopt a tailored skincare routine.

Use moisturising creams

Moisturisers play a crucial role by forming a protective film on the skin, preventing water loss. Select products suited to your skin type: dry, oily, sensitive, etc.

Choose gentle cleansers

Opt for soap-free cleansers that respect the skin’s natural barrier. Avoid harsh products that could weaken your epidermis.

Incorporate dermatological water

Dermatological waters enriched with trace elements soothe and protect the skin after cleansing. They are especially beneficial for sensitive or reactive skin.

Stay hydrated from within

While drinking water does not replace topical skincare, staying hydrated is vital for overall health. Combine adequate water intake with a diet rich in fruits and vegetables to support skin elasticity.

Drinking water is important for overall health, but it is not a miracle solution for skin hydration. To maintain supple and radiant skin, focus on an appropriate skincare routine, gentle cleansers, and effective moisturisers.
